The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued Public Alert No. 029/2026 warning Nigerians about a recall of specific Impala brand gel nail polish products in Brazil containing a prohibited chemical linked to cancer and fertility risks.

According to the alert, NAFDAC received a notification that the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency, the Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA), announced a recall of specific Impala brand gel nail polish products manufactured by Laboratório Avamiller de Cosméticos Ltd.

“NAFDAC received a notification that the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency, the Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA), announced a recall of specific Impala brand gel nail polish products manufactured by Laboratório Avamiller de Cosméticos Ltd,” the alert reads.

The agency said the recall was initiated following the identification of the substance Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO) in the formulation of the affected products.

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a chemical prohibited for use in cosmetics, personal hygiene products, and perfumes in Brazil because of its health-causing hazards, including allergic reactions, carcinogenic potential, and fertility risks.

“As a result, ANVISA has ordered the withdrawal of all affected batches from the Brazilian market,” NAFDAC said.

The agency said the recall applies to all batches of the following products: “Plus, Gel Esmalte Impala Gel, Esmalte Gel Impala Gel Plus, Gel Plus Impala Esmalte Gel, Esmalte Gel Plus Impala and Topcoat Gel Impala Gel Plus Clear.

Although it said, the recall action was initiated in Brazil by the Brazilian regulatory authority.

NAFDAC said it is monitoring the situation and will take appropriate regulatory actions should any of the affected products be identified in the Nigerian supply chain.

NAFDAC urged consumers in possession of any of the affected products to discontinue use and safely isolate the products.

“Report any adverse reactions associated with use to the nearest NAFDAC office, the e-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website, the Med Safety App available for download on Android and iOS stores, or send an email to pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng,” the agency said.
