Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a locally made pistol during a patrol in Akure.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ondo State Command, Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement on Tuesday, said the arrest was made possible through credible intelligence received in May regarding the activities of Idowu Babayemi, a male resident of Abusoro Street, Akure, who was allegedly involved in suspected armed robbery within the area.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the police said operatives placed the suspect under discreet surveillance as part of an intelligence-led operation aimed at preventing criminal activities and ensuring public safety.
“Consequently, while operatives were on routine patrol along the Onimalu area on 7th May 2026, the suspect was sighted and immediately intercepted. A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a locally made pistol concealed in his possession,” the statement said.
The police explained that the successful operation further demonstrates the command’s proactive and intelligence-driven policing strategy targeted at curbing armed robbery, illegal arms proliferation and other criminal activities across the state.
The Commissioner of Police commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance, professionalism and dedication to duty.
