The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Kaduna region, has successfully carried out live-line maintenance on the Zaria–Funtua 132kV transmission line without interrupting bulk power supply to consumers in the area.
The TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Ms Mbah said the maintenance exercise carried out from Saturday, July 4 to Tuesday, July 7 by TCN’s live-line crew involved replacing damaged glass disc insulators on selected transmission towers with a combination of polymer and glass disc insulators to restore the integrity and reliability of the insulation strings.

She said the affected towers included T14, T17, T40, T63, T78, T175, T177 and T178, each of which had at least five damaged glass disc insulators.

Live-line refers to the method used to perform maintenance on electrical systems without disconnecting the circuit. This avoids inconvenience to consumers and helps energy distribution and transmission companies operate more productively.
She explained that the maintenance was successfully executed under energised (live-line) conditions, eliminating the need for a planned outage while ensuring the uninterrupted transmission of bulk electricity throughout the exercise.

“The successful completion of the exercise underscores TCN’s commitment to maintaining a safe, reliable and efficient transmission network through the deployment of modern live-line maintenance techniques,” she said.
