Police operatives in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested two suspected vandals and recovered several cut-to-size armoured cables in Guzape, Abuja.

The arrests were made in the early hours of Saturday, at about 1:30 a.m., by operatives attached to the Guzape Division, the FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed in a statement on Monday.

Ms Adeh, a superintendent of police, said the operatives were on routine surveillance patrol along Walter Ofonagoro Street, Guzape, when they sighted a Lexus SUV and a Toyota Sienna parked under suspicious circumstances.

She said the operatives approached the vehicles to ascertain why the occupants were at the location at that hour.

“On 31st October 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., police operatives attached to Guzape Division, while on routine surveillance patrol along Walter Ofonagoro Street, Guzape, sighted a Lexus SUV and a Toyota Sienna parked under suspicious circumstances. The operatives approached the vehicles to ascertain the occupants’ reasons for being at the location at that hour,” she said.

However, she said upon sighting the police team, the occupants sped off in the vehicles, abandoning one of their accomplices, who attempted to escape on foot.

“The operatives immediately gave chase, intercepted and arrested him,” she added.

She said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, identified as Sagir Abubakar of Kuchigoro Village, FCT, is a member of a gang of vandals who target secluded locations within the FCT to vandalise public and private infrastructure.

“A search of the surrounding premises where he and his accomplices were sighted led to the recovery of several cut-to-size armoured cables.

It said the arrested suspects remain in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913, 08061581938.
