Average retail price of petrol up 23% in 12 months – NBS

The average retail price paid by consumers for petrol rose by 23.69 per cent in April, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

The bureau said this in its “Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch” report for April 2026 released on Friday.

The average retail price paid by consumers for petrol for April 2026 was N1,532.93, indicating a 23.69 per cent increase compared to the value recorded in April 2025 (N1,239.33).

The bureau also said that comparing the average price value with that of the previous month (i.e., March 2026), the average retail price increased by 18.97 per cent from N1,288.54.

On state profile analysis, the NBS said Yobe state had the highest average retail price for petrol at N1,599.05, followed by Edo and Bauchi states at N1,595.74 and N1,589.07, respectively.

Conversely, the statistics office said Niger, Sokoto and Katsina state had the lowest average retail prices for petrol, at N1,403.89, N1,404.16, and N1,406.28, respectively.

The NBS said the highest average retail price was recorded in the South-South Zone at N1,566.76, while the North West Zone had the lowest price of N1,508.81.
