Tax paid by Nigerian companies down 8% in Q1 2026 – NBS

Companies paid N1.37 trillion as taxes in the first quarter of 2026, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.

The bureau in its Company Income Tax (CIT) Q1 2026 released on Monday said the figure indicates a decrease of 8.08 per cent on a quarter-on-quarter basis from N1.49 trillion in Q4 2025.

Of the total CIT collected, the NBS said domestic CIT contributed N538.91 billion, while foreign CIT payment accounted for N828.82 billion during the quarter.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the statistics office said water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities recorded the highest growth rate with 485.71 per cent.

This it said was followed by activities of households as employers, undifferentiated goods and services-producing activities of households for own use with 197.04 per cent.

On the other hand, it said agriculture, forestry and fishing recorded the least growth rate with 73.52 per cent, followed by construction with 63.15 per cent.

In terms of sectoral shares, the NBS said the activities with the largest shares in Q1 2026 were financial and insurance activities with 24.73 per cent; mining and quarrying with 16.06 per cent and manufacturing with 13.82 per cent.

Conversely, the bureau said the activities of households as employers, undifferentiated goods and services-producing activities of households for own use recorded the least share with 0.01 per cent.

This it said was followed by activities of extraterritorial organisations and bodies with 0.13 per cent; and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities with 0.38 per cent.

“However, on a year-on-year basis, CIT collections in Q1 2026 decreased by 31.05 per cent from Q1 2025,” the NBS said.
