The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said a fatal road traffic accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge by Adekunle inward Iyana Oworo on Sunday, resulting in the tragic loss of life.

The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, in a statement on Sunday night, said the incident occurred when a driver of a Lexus car EPE 765 JN rammed into a police officer riding a Bajaj motorcycle on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The statement said that while the police officer died on the spot, the driver of the Lexus Jeep immediately reported himself at the Adekunle Police Division.

Upon receipt of distress alerts, the statement said officials of LASTMA swiftly mobilised to the scene alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force to initiate immediate traffic control, emergency safety measures and preliminary incident management procedures.

“In a bid to avert secondary collisions and guarantee the safety of other road users, traffic cones and cautionary safety devices were strategically positioned around the affected corridor while police operatives commenced proper documentation and investigative procedures relating to the unfortunate occurrence,” the statement said.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the urgent need for motorists to exercise maximum caution, strictly adhere to stipulated speed limits, and eschew all forms of reckless driving that could endanger human lives and public safety.

He further emphasised that road users must cultivate responsible driving habits, remain conscious of the fragility of human life, and comply faithfully with extant traffic laws to stem the alarming tide of avoidable road fatalities across Lagos State.
