Nigeria’s electricity grid on Tuesday collapsed yet again, throwing several cities into darkness.
The grid collapsed around 10:48 a.m., with generation dropping significantly.
The latest development comes days after the national grid collapsed on Friday, marking the first such incident in 2026.
Confirming the development, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) said: Dear valued customer, kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 10:48hrs which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.
“We are currently working with our TCN partners as we hope for the speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as the power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us.”
Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc (PHED), in a statement posted on its X handle, said: : “Dear esteemed customers, kindly be informed that the outage currently experienced in all our franchises is due to grid collapse.
“We appeal to our esteemed customers to exercise patience as the relevant team is working tirelessly to restore power supply as soon as possible. All inconveniences are regretted,” it said.
In recent years, the power sector has faced numerous challenges, including issues with electricity policy enforcement, regulatory uncertainty, gas supply shortages, transmission system constraints, and significant planning shortfalls in the power sector.
This latest collapse adds to a series that has raised concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s electricity system.
The Assistant General Manager, Corporate Communication of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kazah Bili Akau, could not be reached as of press time Tuesday afternoon.
NISO is responsible for managing electricity system operations, including load allocation from generation companies to distribution companies and eligible customers.
