The Tanzania Immigration Department has removed Nigeria from its referral visa category, ending the additional clearance requirement for Nigerian travellers.

The department disclosed this in a statement issued last Friday, saying the decision followed amendments to its immigration regulations published in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026.

“The Immigration Department informs the public that citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have been officially removed from the Referred Visa Category, following published amendments in the Government Gazette number 246 of 2026,” the statement said.

Under the new directive, which takes effect immediately, Nigerians will no longer be subject to referral visa restrictions.

“With immediate effect, Nigerian nationals travelling to the United Republic of Tanzania are no longer subject to referral visa restrictions and will follow standard visa application procedures through the official immigration online portal or designated entry points,” the department said.

The development means Nigerians will only need to secure a standard visa through Tanzania’s official immigration portal or at designated entry points, without extra approval.

The change is expected to ease travel for Nigerians visiting Tanzania for tourism, business, study and other purposes.

Tanzania places 27 other countries on its referral visa list, where applicants cannot get a visa on arrival and must apply in advance and wait for approval before travelling.

Countries in this category are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Lebanon.

Others are: Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Somaliland, Sierra Leone, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
