The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) has commissioned two NU Synergy CNG refuelling stations and a conversion centre in Kano State.
With the commissioning, the number of CNG refuelling stations in Kano has risen to 12 from virtually none about a year ago, Pi-CNG & EV disclosed in a statement on Sunday.
This, Pi-CNG & EV said, reflects the rapid growth of the CNG ecosystem following the activation of the Northern Corridor.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG & EV, Ismaeel Ahmed, described the development as evidence of what private-sector investors can achieve when they respond quickly to emerging opportunities in Nigeria’s clean mobility sector.
According to him, the future of transportation must increasingly be driven by more affordable energy alternatives, particularly in a country with Nigeria’s significant natural gas resources.
“The future belongs to cheaper energy sources for transportation. It is difficult to achieve that with PMS and diesel,” he said.
Mr Ahmed reiterated that Nigeria’s energy advantage lies significantly in its abundant gas resources, noting that greater domestic utilisation of natural gas could help reduce transportation costs while opening new opportunities for investment, job creation and technical skills development.
“Nigeria is a gas country, not an oil country. We have over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven natural gas,” he added.

He recalled that the promoter of NU Synergy approached Pi-CNG & EV only a few months earlier with an interest in investing in the CNG sector.
“Today is one of my proudest moments,” Mr Ahmed said, explaining that the investor had walked into his office barely four months ago seeking to understand the opportunities within the CNG ecosystem.
Following discussions, he said the investor was connected with the initiative’s operations and gas teams for the necessary guidance and technical support.
“Four months later, this is the story. He is commissioning a CNG station in Kano.”
He noted that NU Synergy has already developed two facilities in Kano, one along Zaria Road and another in Mariri along Wudil Road, with plans to expand to other locations.
He commended the speed of execution, describing the investment as an example of the private-sector response required to deepen CNG adoption across the country.
“You are a doer, you are a deliverer, and you have delivered in Kano,” he said.
The statement said the commissioning is a significant shift for Kano, where CNG infrastructure has expanded rapidly within the past year.
“From having no significant network of refuelling facilities, the state now has 12 CNG stations, improving access for vehicle owners, commercial transport operators and fleet managers adopting gas-powered transportation.
“The growth is also reinforcing the objectives of the Northern Corridor activation, which is aimed at expanding CNG infrastructure, vehicle conversions and clean mobility investments across northern Nigeria.
“The NU Synergy facility combines CNG refuelling with vehicle conversion services, providing motorists with access to both conversion and fuel supply within the same ecosystem,” the statement said.

As part of activities marking the launch, it said motorists were also offered free CNG refuelling for the day, giving existing CNG users an opportunity to experience the new facility.
“For Pi-CNG & EV, the development represents more than the commissioning of another station. It demonstrates the increasing participation of private investors in building the infrastructure required to make CNG a practical transportation option for Nigerians.

“With more stations coming on stream, the initiative expects increased availability to help address one of the major concerns of CNG users: access to convenient refuelling infrastructure.
“From zero to 12 stations within a year, Kano’s clean mobility landscape is changing, and the Northern Corridor is steadily taking shape,” the statement said.
