The price per litre of kerosene was highest in Sokoto, Jigawa and Taraba States in May, selling at ₦3,984.09, ₦3,824.68 and ₦3,595.64 respectively, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said.
The bureau disclosed this in its May Kerosene Price Watch published on Wednesday.
It said the average retail price per litre of household Kerosene paid by consumers in May 2026 was ₦2,971.94, showing a decrease of 0.17 per cent compared to ₦2,976.94 recorded in April 2026.
On a year-on-year basis, the NBS said the average retail price per litre of the product increased by 36.62 per cent from ₦2,175.29 in May 2025.
“Sokoto with ₦3,984.09, followed by Jigawa with ₦3,824.68 and Taraba with ₦3,595.64 states paid the highest average price per litre,” the report said.
According to the NBS, the states with the lowest price were Bayelsa with ₦2,018.79, followed by Kogi with ₦2,348.81 and Ekiti with ₦2,511.31.
In addition, analysis by zone showed that the North-West recorded the highest average retail price per litre of household kerosene with ₦3,343.12, followed by the North-East with ₦3,004.30, while the South-South recorded the lowest with ₦2,777.76.

It explained that the average retail price per gallon of household kerosene paid by consumers in May 2026 was ₦11,949.39 indicating a decrease of 10.80 per cent from ₦13,396.23 in April 2026. On a year-on-year basis, this increased by 40.88 per cent from ₦8,482.22 in May 2025.
On state profile analysis, the NBS said Sokoto recorded the highest average retail price per gallon of household kerosene with ₦15,928.39 followed by Kebbi with ₦15,855.73 and Niger with ₦14,465.43.
“Bayelsa recorded the lowest price with ₦7,084.56, followed by Ekiti and Kwara with ₦9,300.92 and ₦9,419.85, respectively.
“Analysis by zone showed that the North-West recorded the highest average retail price per gallon of household kerosene with ₦13,444.05, followed by the North-East with ₦12,519.36 while the South-East recorded the lowest with ₦11,032.42,” the report said.
