Nigeria’s largest air carrier, Air Peace, says its Abuja-to-Kano flight encountered a bird strike upon arrival at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Wednesday evening.

Osifo-Whiskey Efe, spokesperson, Air Peace Limited, in a statement issued on Wednesday night, said that, in compliance with aviation safety protocols, the affected aircraft was grounded for comprehensive technical assessments.

“We wish to inform our esteemed passengers that our Abuja-to-Kano service this evening encountered a bird strike upon arrival at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. In strict compliance with aviation safety protocols, the affected aircraft has been grounded for comprehensive technical assessments,” the statement said.

Bird strikes occur when birds collide with aircraft, often causing damage that requires inspection until the plane is cleared for flight.

Flight disruptions caused by bird strikes are common in Nigeria’s aviation sector, especially during certain weather conditions, and airlines are required under aviation safety regulations to subject affected aircraft to inspections before returning them to service.

The airline said that to ensure their passengers reach their destinations safely and with minimal delay, an alternative aircraft was immediately deployed to resume the service.

“We deeply empathise with our esteemed passengers affected by this unforeseen operational disruption.

“Air Peace remains unyielding in its commitment to the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance as we thank our passengers for their patience and continued understanding,” the statement said.
