FCT Police launch violent crime response unit

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Monday officially launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) at the Old SARS Office (Abattoir), Guzape Junction, Abuja, as part of efforts aimed at strengthening the fight against violent crimes and enhancing public safety across the FCT.

The event, which was presided over by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had in attendance heads and representatives of sister security agencies, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, senior police officers, and other distinguished guests.

Among those present were His Royal Highness, Adamu Baba Yunusa, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman, FCT Council of Chiefs; the Commander, Guards Brigade, Brigadier General A.O. Onasanya; representatives of the Naval Base Abuja, 053 NAF Camp, Army Headquarters Garrison, the Nigerian Immigration Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), among others.

Speaking during the launch, the CP stated that the establishment of the VCRU reflects the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, towards proactively addressing threats posed by armed robbery, kidnapping, violent attacks, organised criminal activities, and other serious crimes that threaten public peace and safety.

He noted that the unit has been strategically structured into five operational sectors across the FCT to ensure broader coverage, improved intelligence gathering, faster response capability, and more effective deployment of resources.

The Commissioner of Police emphasised that officers selected into the unit were carefully screened and rigorously trained, stressing that professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights must remain the guiding principles of their operations.

He warned that misconduct, abuse of authority, harassment, extortion, and other forms of unprofessional conduct would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

He further called on residents of the FCT to continue supporting security agencies through timely information sharing, noting that sustainable security can only be achieved through partnership, collaboration, and collective responsibility.
