How food prices surged across Nigeria in April – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said the prices of some food items in Nigeria increased in April.

The bureau stated this in its Selected Food Price Watch report for April 2026, recently released on its website.

The NBS said the report shows that the average price of Tomatoes (1kg) stood at N1,177.92, representing an 8.23 per cent year-on-year decline from N1,283.57 recorded in April 2025. On a month-on-month basis, the bureau said the price also increased by 6.60 per cent compared to March 2026.

Similarly, it said the average price of brown beans (1kg) was N1,338.93 in April 2026, reflecting a significant year-on-year decline of 44.89 per cent from N2,429.39 in April 2025, while on a month-on-month basis, this item increased by 0.99 per cent from N1,325.85 in March 2026.

In the same period, the NBS said the average price of Garri white sold loose (1kg) declined by 39.86 per cent year-on-year, from N1,345.10 in April 2025 to N808.96 in April 2026. Compared with March 2026, the price grew by 0.93 per cent.

Likewise, it said the average price of Onion bulb (1kg) decreased to N1,164.39 in April 2026 from N1,503.56 in April 2025, representing a year-on-year reduction of 22.56 per cent, while a month-on-month increase of 0.98 per cent was also recorded.

According to the bureau, the average price of Ginger fresh (1kg) stood at N5,581.82, which represents a 12.30 per cent increase when compared to April 2025 (year-on-year), and an increase of 0.73 per cent month-on-month.

States

The statistics office said the April 2026 state-level price profile indicates notable variations across states.

It said Bayelsa recorded the highest average price of tomatoes (1kg), N1,600.73, while Plateau reported the lowest average price, N730.48.

For Beans brown (1kg), the NBS said Oyo state recorded the highest average price at N1,938.91, whereas Taraba state had the lowest at N750.

In the case of Garri white (1kg), the NBS said Abia recorded the highest average price at N1,075.47, while Plateau State recorded the lowest at N517.94.

Similarly, it said the average price of an onion bulb (1kg) was highest in Abia at N2,191.63, while Nasarawa recorded the lowest average price at N832.16.

Regional

The NBS said a regional analysis indicates notable price variations across zones for selected food items.

For Tomatoes (1kg), it said the South-South zone recorded the highest average price at N1,561.10, followed by the South-East at N1379.57, while the North-West reported the lowest average price at N822.72.

In the case of Beans brown (1kg), the bureau said the highest average prices were observed in the South-West (N1,787.09) and South-South (N1,764.99) zones, whereas the North-East recorded the lowest price at N871.79.

For Garri white (1kg), the statistics office said the South-East had the highest average price at N944.58, followed by the South-South at N944.01, while the North-Central zone recorded the lowest average price at N673.88.

Similarly, it said the average price of ginger (1kg) was highest in the South-West at N6,812.92, followed by the South-East at N6,432.15, while the North-East recorded the lowest average price at N3,881.12.
