Work resumed on Tuesday at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) following the suspension of the one-day strike called by workers’ unions.

ThePreview Media reported that the operations at the NUPRC ground to a halt on Monday after the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) division of the NUPRC shut down all offices nationwide.

The union began an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and administrative grievances.

A source familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity, told this newspaper that the strike followed “prolonged but unsuccessful engagements” between PENGASSAN members and NUPRC management.

The source stated that the union members raised concerns over promotions, training opportunities, and broader governance within the agency.

Resolution

In a statement on Tuesday, the NUPRC’s Head of Media and Strategic Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, said the strike was suspended late on Monday after top management of the NUPRC reached successful negotiations with PENGASSAN and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

While details of the negotiations were not disclosed, Mr Akinkuotu said the strike which lasted for 12 hours affected only administrative work while regulatory activities in oil and gas facilities remained unaffected.

“The industrial action was called off on the night of June 1, 2026, after successful negotiations between the top management of the NUPRC and the two in-house unions – the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG),” the statement said.

The commission urged members of the public to disregard reports on crude oil production disruptions as well as publications stating that the disagreement centred on foreign training.

“Lastly, the NUPRC promised to improve the operating environment of its workforce and prioritise staff development in line with the Petroleum Industry Act,” he said.
